Production Exploration Student Association (HIMA EP) Akamigas will hold an annual event in June 2021 in the form of an international-scale competition in the oil sector, namely Derrick 2021. There are several types of competitions held, including paper and poster competitions . The theme raised in the paper and poster competition is ” New Technologies in Unconventional Oil and Gas Resources for Future Resilience “. This competition includes three stages, namely abstract submission on 20 August 2021, full paper collection for eight selected finalists on 21 September 2021, and presentation on 24 September 2021. The 1st place winner was won by the Challenger Team from Gadjah Mada University consisting of Sasa Aulia (Head of the Physics Engineering Team 20), Enyca Aidina (Geological Engineering 20), and Felix Arion (Civil Engineering 20).
In this competition, the paper proposed by Sasa and his team is entitled ” Green NanoFluid-NitroFrac and Electro-Osmo Treatment (GENNEO): An Environmentally-Safe Unconventional Resources Technology with Adaptive Strategy to Maximize The National Oil Production in The Energy Transition Era “. The reason behind the production of this paper is Indonesia’s high oil consumption, namely 1.06 million BOPD in 2020, while its production is only at 705,000 BOPD. This difference in consumption and production continues to increase, Indonesia’s oil consumption is believed by SKK Migas to increase by 29% in 2030 to 77.5 MTOE.
On the other hand, unconventional hydrocarbon production still produces a lot of waste water from the well drilling and completion stage and well production stage . In fact, water scarcity in Indonesia is still a big problem. Almost 10% of Indonesia’s population is predicted to experience a clean water crisis in 2045. Therefore, Sasa and his team offered an idea called Green NanoFluid-NitroFrac and Electro-Osmo Treatment (GENNEO) to solve problems related to oil production and water scarcity in Indonesia.
The proposed idea is nanosilica-alumina drilling fluid as the option of drilling fluid that is more environmentally friendly and can avoid the clay swelling in the shale formation . In addition, Sasa and his team also proposed an alternative fracturing, namely LN2 + ULWP fracturing which can make fractures with high conductivity and hold them more evenly. As a result, it is evident that LN2 fracturecan increase oil production by 289.8% and ULWP increase cumulative production to 63% in horizontal oil wells. In addition, GENNEO can produce clean water that is treated through the use of wastewater after exploitation in the field. Therefore, it is hoped that GENNEO can help solve government problems related to the development of oil and gas technology from unconventional sources but still pay attention to aspects of energy transition.
With the submission of this work, it is hoped that it will become a consideration for the government and the oil and gas industry to develop green technology . In addition, this innovation can certainly help realize the 2030 SDGs, namely at point 6 ( Clean Water and Sanitation ), point 7 ( Clean energy ), point 9 ( Industry and Innovation ), and point 12 ( Responsible Consumption and Production ) which are targets. It is hoped that through the submission of this innovation, it can provide benefits for the sustainability of life and the economy in Indonesia.
