Smart Innovation of Writing (SNOW) is a scientific writing competition in the Engineering Physics Week (EPW) series organized by the Department of Engineering Physics, Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology. The theme for the 12th SNOW EPW was “ Innovation of Technology in Humanity for Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals ”.
In this competition, Laurentius Kevin Hendinata (Physical Engineering 2019) together with Ahmad Ilham Rokhul Fikri (Physical Engineering 2019) and Ribka Prilia (Physical Engineering 2019) who were supervised by Dr. Nur Abdillah Siddiq managed to get 2nd place and the title of Best Presentation . The paper presented at the SNOW EPW entitled ” Thermowood : Thermochromic Smart Windows with Transparent Wood Composite Material as an Effort to Mitigation Climate Change in Indonesia”. This paper is structured to look at the situation where increasing energy consumption contributes to global warming and climate change, including the building sector which is responsible for 36% of final energy consumption, more than 55% of electricity demand, and more than 39% of carbon dioxide emissions. .
For this reason, the use of a transparent wood matrix as a basic substrate for thermochromic windows is proposed as one of the energy-saving window innovations. Simulation modeling illustrates that its application to buildings provides energy savings of up to 18.44% in Indonesia’s weather profile which is in accordance with the reduction of its carbon footprint.
With an economical price, its mass use in replacing the function of conventional glass windows can greatly help reduce energy consumption in the building sector, both residential and commercial buildings. In addition, through reducing energy waste, this can be one of the steps to mitigate climate change.
